A mojito is known for its Cuban roots, but this popular cocktail is number one on a lot of people’s list.  To make a mojito, you gently muddle (crush) lime juice, sugar, and mint leaves.  Then in the same glass, you add white rum and some soda water.  Fill the glass up with ice and garnish with a lime.  There are tons of variations of this drink that use different flavored vodkas and fruits other than lime, like strawberry mojitos and peach mojitos.

The next popular cocktail is the cosmopolitan.  These are made by shaking vodka, Triple Sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice together and serving in a cocktail glass garnished by an orange peel.  Cosmopolitans became a popular cocktail by the TV show Sex and the City, where the characters drank them all the time.

Margaritas are a very popular cocktail that has many variations.  But a classic margarita is tequila, Triple Sec, plus lime juice with salt of the rim of the glass.  Margarita can be served with ice (on the rocks), blended with ice (frozen), or without ice (straight up).  You can add fruit puree for different flavors or other orange flavored liquors in place of the triple sec to make different variations.

James Bond loved our next popular cocktail shaken, not stirred.  It’s a martini!  A martini is made with vermouth and gin with a five to one ratio.  It comes in a cocktail glass and garnished with an olive skewered on a toothpick.  The dryness of a martini is based on how much vermouth is used.  A very dry martini has little to no vermouth.  You can also get them dirty by adding olive juice.  There are some different versions including the appletini and chocolate martini.

Next is the daiquiri.  The daiquiri became a popular drink in the 1940’s and has been going strong ever since.  The classic daiquiri is made with rum, lime juice, and sugar shaken together and served in a cocktail glass.  However, they are widely popular for their fruit varieties such as strawberry, banana, and melon.  They can also be served frozen or on ice.

Last on the list is a drink that includes a little bit of all the liquors.  It is called a Long Island Iced Tea, but don’t be fooled.  There is no tea in this drink.  It is a mix of vodka, tequila, gin, rum, triple sec, and a splash of Coca-Cola with ice.  This drink must be shaken well before serving.  What is not to love about this popular cocktail?  It has the best of all worlds.

Recipe Mojito Cocktail

Recipe Mojito Cocktail.

How to present a mojitos cocktail...

The making of recipe mojito…

The traditional recipe mojito is usually made with five ingredients.  They are white rum, lime juice, mint, sugar, and club soda.  The mojito originated in Cuba and is used to be called a Cuban highball.  It is one of the most famous rum highballs and very popular in the summer months as it’s cool and refreshing.  Its combination of sweetness, citrus, and mint flavors are used to complement the kick of the rum.

Making the classic mojitos recipe is very easy.

You will need ten mint leaves, one-half of a lime cut into four wedges, two tablespoons of white sugar, 45 mL of white rum, 45 mL of club soda (Club soda can be changed to lemonade at a push), and a tall glass of ice.

(Traditionally the recipe mojito is made with rum, but for extra top up you could add vodka for a more powerful kick… Vodka has almost no taste on its own, and therefore will hardly change the taste of the mojito at all.)

-   First, you need to place the mint leaves, one lime wedge, and a pinch of sugar in a sturdy glass.

-   Muddle the mint and limes.  To muddle, you will need a muddler which is a long pestle that is usually shaped like a baseball bat and made out of wood.  A muddler is available for sale in the herb and spice aisle of most kitchen and general stores.

Muddling is a very important skill to develop as a bartender or host. Don’t worry, this just requires a bit of  practice.  The art to muddling is to press gently down on the items in the glass and then twist.  The twisting is to create friction between the leaves, limes, and sugar.  You do not need to break or destroy the leaves and lime.  Just bruise them a little.  This will release the flavor while keeping the leaves intact.

-   Then add two more lime wedges and the sugar into this glass.  Muddle these again until the lime juice is released.  The fill the tall glass with ice and pour the rum over the ice.  Fill the rest of the glass with club soda and garnish the glass with the last lime wedge.    It sounds like a lot, but after some practice, you will be doing it in less than five minutes.

Now that you know the basics, here are a few more cocktail recipes tropical mojito style.

-   First is the Mango Mojito.   It is made the same way as before except you need to add one tablespoon of mango nectar to the glass after the soda water.  Don’t forget to stir well.

-   The second is the Strawberry Mojito.  Again, it is the same as before except add three fresh strawberries to the limes and mint leaves before you muddle.  Aren’t you glad that you learned the classic recipe mojito?  You can make any flavored mojito by either adding fresh fruit before muddling or the juice of the fruit at the end before stirring.

-   Last but not least is a truly unique cocktail recipe for mojitos.

This is called the Icebreaker Mojito because the recipe makes two drinks.  With two drinks, you can make yourself one and pick someone you want to talk too and share the other one with.  Now, the ice is broken.  You’ll have someone at the party to talk to and praise you for your awesome bartender skills.

To do this, you will need 45 mL white rum, 120 mL of pineapple juice, two pinches of sugar, 15 mint leaves, one lime in eight wedges, 60 mL of seedless watermelon cubes (1.5 cm), 60mL of pineapple cubes (1.5 cm), and ice to fill up two glasses.  Muddle the mint by itself with a pinch of sugar.  Then add in the watermelon and pineapple pieces a little at a time while muddling.  In a cocktail shaker, fill it up halfway with ice cubes, the fruity mint mixture, rum, pineapple juice, and another pinch of sugar.  Shake very well.  Then divide between two glasses and garnish with a lime wedge.

The mojitos recipe can be adapted to the fruit that’s in season, tropical style but keeping to the basics of rum (+ vodka for extra kick), mint lime, sugar, club soda and ice.

3 Tips And Ideas On Making Fruity Cocktail Recipes

Fruity Cocktail Recipes.

Tropical Fruity Cocktail Recipes

Many different types of cocktails have fruit as part of the ingredients.  If you want to make a great fruity cocktail, then you need to know more about how fruit is incorporated into the recipes.

Here are 3 tips on making fruity cocktail recipes.

1. Fruit Infusion.

One way a fruit is used by placing the fruit, usually fresh strawberries, limes, lemon, or apples, into a bottle of liquor.  You then place the bottle into a dark place, undisturbed for up to a month.  The fruit taste is then distributed throughout the liquor.   The end result is a fruit infused liquor such as strawberry vodka that will make the liquor very unique.

2. Fruit puree is also used in many cocktail recipes.

These purees can counter-balance a negative characteristic of the liquor used in a drink such as masking a harsh taste or making the cocktail smell better.  These purees are either sold at a store already pureed or you can make your own.  To make your own and save a little money, all you have to do is place about 500 grams of your fruit (washed and void of stems and seeds) into a blender or fruit processor with 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (this is called sugar syrup).  Then blend it until the mixture is smooth.  You can then store this into the refrigerator for 3 days or you can freeze it for upto 2 months.

3. Fruit is also used as a garnish in most drinks.

You will need to become familar with which fruit matches a certain flavor of drink.  Most drink recipes will tell you what fruit to garnish with.  There are usually two ways to add the fruit as a garnish.  One is to take a slice of lemon, lime, apple, strawberry, or many others and placing it on the rim of the glass by cutting a little slice into the fruit. Another way is by taking pieces of the fruit and driving a toothpick or skewer into them.  This is usually used if there is more than one fruit that will compliment the drink.  You then place the skewer on top of the glass.

Tropical Fruity Cocktail Recipes…

Now here are a few classic fruity cocktail recipes that include an example of each way to use fruit in a cocktail.  The first is called:

 1. Triple Citrus Infusion.

You will need 3 bottles (750 ml) of vodka, 3 small ruby grapefruits, 4 tangerines, and 4 lemons.  Rinse all the fruits and poke each fruit with a toothpick all the way through about 40 times.  Then place in a large jar all the fruit and pour in the vodka.  Make sure you have enough vodka to cover all the fruit.  Let it sit undisturbed for at least 5 days.  Then strain and serve.

Next is a tropical recipe calling for a puree.  This is called:

 2. Hard Strawberry Lemonade.

It is a great summer drink to be enjoyed by the pool or at a barbecue.  You will need 60 ml of vodka, 60 ml of coconut rum (either bought or made), 60 ml of concentrated lemonade, 15 ml of sour mix, and 15 ml of strawberry puree.  Place everything in a blender with a scoop of ice.  Blend together until frothy.  Serve in a hurricane glass garnished with a lemon slice and a strawberry.

Ideas, tips and examples on how fruit is incorporated into fruity cocktail recipes…

The best advice for using fruit is to use fresh fruit over frozen fruit.  Fresh fruit has a better taste that is better infused into the cocktail.  Fresh fruit doesn’t have any chemical additives or preservatives that could interfere with the perfect balance of liquor and fruit.  Fresh fruit will always look better as a garnish.  So opt to have fresh fruit even though it may require a little more prep time on your part.  Your guests will thank you for having prettier and better tasting drinks.

Cocktail recipes to try

An introduction to cocktail recipes and what you need to get started…

A party isn’t a party without a few drinks thrown into the mix.  It’s the cocktails that get the party started, as it’s the perfect ice breaker to any gathering. A well selected starter drink will leave people talking, help them loosen up and relax to have more fun.

These special and unique drinks can be made by anyone.  In order to make cocktails, all you need is to learn a few basics of bar tending, some simple equipment, the right stock and to follow a few favourite cocktail recipes.

Presentation is key to any cocktail recipe.

Let’s start with glasses. Having the correct glasses for drinks makes you look more professional.  If you are serving multiple drinks, you will need different glasses. You can never tell what kind of drink may be requested, so be prepared.  A good selection to have on hand would be; champagne flutes or glasses, martini glasses, shot glasses, tall glasses, and margarita glasses just to name a few.  Most of the glasses have in the name what kind of drink goes in them.

If you are ever in doubt and are serving a mixed drink, then put it in a tall glass.

Now it is time for bar equipment.

To make the most popular drinks, a blender is a must.  As long as a blender can crush ice, it doesn’t matter how expensive it is.  Frozen margaritas and daiquiris are made with a blender.  Another thing you will need is a cocktail shaker.  These are steel and have a cap that strains the drink.  This way you can shake a drink in ice, but serve it without ice.  Martinis and margaritas are made with these.

Ice is definitely a requirement for most cocktail recipes

Also use a measure for consistency. Shot glasses are an ideal measure on how much liquor you are putting into a drink.  This way you can make the same tasting drink throughout the evening and thereafter.

Liquors to keep in stock.

Let’s discuss some liquors you will need to be prepared.  Rum, vodka, tequila, bourbon, and gin are the most popular ones.  Rum can be mixed with coke or used to make daiquiris.  Vodka has a very subtle taste, so is very versatile and can be used as a base for most cocktails. Usually though, it’s  mixed with orange juice or used to make martinis.  Tequila with it’s unique aniseed taste works great as shots when taken with a slice of lemon and salt. It is also used to make margaritas.  Bourbon and gin are usually served by themselves but not exclusively.

Garnishes.

To complete the cocktails, you need garnishes.  Garnishes are the final touches on drinks that will make them pop.  Fruit slices such as lemon, pineapple or kiwi fruit are placed on the rim of the glasses and are sucked at the end of shots. Tiny umbrellas bought from most super markets are cute to spike into the tropical fruit on the glass. Even though they might seem cheesy they will add character to your party. Mint leaves when add to a cocktail imparts a freshness and extra colour to a drink.

Salt, fruit syrups, cream liqueur or crystalized sugar is used around the glass rims of margaritas and daiquiris respectively as added flavour. A clean plate is normally used to hold the salt or sweetener to which the glass rim is dipped and rotated in the moist flavouring.  As long as you have these essentials, along with some cocktail recipes, your party will have fantastic drinks and a great atmosphere.
